Tiger woods 2003 Review
The Tiger Woods PGA franchise dominated golfing sims from perhaps 1999 onwards, Each year (more or less) saw the release of an updated version.
It’s games like these that got EA a big following in the games community. I won’t reference all the tiger woods PGA games and compare them, so is it worth playing as a retro game?
Yes.
Take on the tiger challenges or compete in the PGA. I recommend the Tiger Challenges, as they place you against NPC’s with some personality. You get to play skins, stroke and match
play. And for a bit of levelling experience, much like in RPG’s you get to level up skills. The main thing I like about this version is the personalities of the NPC’s and the custom
courses, such as predator. Some of these will test you. The goal is to play against tiger himself and beat the challenge.
This is far more fun with another human player thrown into the mix and is available for most platforms. I prefer the xbox / PS2.
Some of the shots you take are impossible to work out due to differing elevations and adding and subtracting distance off your shot. There is always the temptation to hit it far and
“just make it” onto the next fairway or green. This will punish you if you don’t hit it perfect. I found myself questioning some of the caddy tips or meters showing the putts, as I
seem to hit them bang on and fail. Perhaps this can be low level skill thing, so you may want to place points in putting early on.
The highland course is probably one of my favourites and some of the NPCs are difficult to beat. The biggest problem with Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 is the skill of the opponents.
It’s not because they’re good; it’s because landing in the rough / bunker makes absolutely no difference to NPC. They will still put it 3 feet off the pin. However, you landing in
these areas will seriously handicap your next shot. They are also prone to bouncing the ball over obstacles like rough patches which are impossible to predict for us.
It’s an early game with some quirks but still very enjoyable. Give it a go on the platform of your choice.
